From A to B / This to That (TRI Ark-6)

cover

Available only as a download
for the bargain price of £2

Originally put out on cassette in 1995, when they were ‘out of fashion’, this release only reached the promotional stage.
21 years later in the digital download age it is worthy of rediscovery.

Tonal was really into his electronic phase having formed Koven-oe, which included Scanner & getting 46,000 Fibres together as a result of Scanner’s departure.
Simon Wickham-Smith had released a few albums & singles on the Forced Exposure & other independent labels, mainly with main collaborator Richard Youngs, before they met via a mutual friend. Simon’s many activities are to be found on Wikipedia.

Early promo cassettes were sent out to various music publications & one which describes it best was written for EST in it’s summer 1996 edition by Brian Duguid :
‘Think of the most German cosmic music that you can, & then double it, as both boys battle it out on their synths on From A to B. So: Andromedan bubbling, microwave drones, insectoid squittering. But also: rapacious white noise, quantum effect harmonies, anti-matter confusion. If the sound quality leaves a little to be desired, it actually adds to the occasionally discordant intensity. On This to That things are less raucous, concentrating on initially on the drones & harmonies, although shuddering with distortion. Top stuff.’

We feel it’s quite an aural experience as well! One for the hardest of hardcore electronics fans out there!
As Big Reg says ‘Inner vestigate for something special.’

Download only. ( We will do one of CDr for you, if you want but contact us first).

Mantras For Your Dream Machine (TRI Ark-5)

a1381184421_10

Available only as a download
for the bargain price of £4

Only available in limited editions, as a casette in ’93 & CD in ’95, Mantras for your Dream Machine is now more available in this digital age.
Released under the title of A Tonal Mantra, this current title was the original title chosen.

A review from the esteemed Music From The Empty Quarter, edition #9, in 1994, gives the description to this change:

‘…the instrumental pieces here generally consist of rhythmic synthesizer pulses over which repeating electronics or clarinet, trumpet & horn lines play to hypnotic effect – true electro mantras. Echoing abstract percussion is evident on the less direct, more floating pieces providing the ideal counterpoint to the forward pieces…
The mode is often reminiscent of Eastern music.
A few of the tracks differ, the crystalline Underworld, for example, these merely heightening the overall impact…
A Multifarious collection. Ideal for attentive, late night listening (with your dream machine perhaps?)’.

Gavin Mitchell, from Identical & the Amal Gamal Ensemble guests on trumpet plus there is a bonus interpretation mix by the ubiquitous Scanner.
Tonal soon after this album was recorded went on to get 46,000 Fibres together.
You can do no wrong but look into dream machines & inner-vestigate!

Blue Field Entopic Phenomena (TRI 27)

Blue Field Entoptic Phenomena

CD out of stock. Temporarily available only as a download

Blue Field Entoptic Phenomena is the first 46,000 Fibres release in over 11 years.
Formed in the mid ’90s ‘the Fibres’ spent 10 years playing improvised music & were a feature of various Kosmische club appearances, being the first to play there.

Recorded after a 10 year lay off from live performances it features main stalwarts Tonal D., on synths & Leon Maurice-Jones on percussives. Plus Justin Paton, from cult band NOW, who was part of the group, returning to play guitar & synth. Howard Jacques rounds off the quartet in his first foray with ‘the Fibres’ on bass, synth & various exotic instruments. He has sinced joined the Band of Holy Joy on bass guitar.

This nine track collection was edited down from a continous two hour take! The worry of not playing together for so long soon evaporated, resulting in, probably, their most coherent, well produced & dare we say listenable albums to date. Like a cross between Tangerine Dream & Faust, with English psych influences, fans of those musics should inner-vestigate.

A video for the track Neutral can be found here

Thoroughly Revised (TRI Ark-4)

Innerpropriates cover

CD sold out
Available only as a download
for the bargain price of £6

A long time coming but at last a comprehensive revision of Innerpropriates music.
They lasted from 1981 to 1987, & in this time made seven albums which were put out in the heyday of the UK do it yourself scene.
They finally got some sort of recognition being featured in the Messthetics series of CDs that chronicled the era in the new century.

Six tracks from their first album “Is This The Aqueous?” bookend this compilation, two of which, “Changing Our Wallpaper” & “Wake Up, Take It!” feature a guest appearance from Hawkwind legend Nik Turner.
Inbetween are key tracks from the rest of their cassette only releases.
Eighteen tracks, many of which only got a limited exposure at the time.

The emphasis though is not on their songwriting efforts but more on their experimental/improvised pieces. The Slide is a piano only piece that is not for the faint hearted in it’s intensity, as it twists & turns.
The Berlin Gate recalls a krautrock/Ash Ra Tempel vibe
& Crying Out For Somebody is a real power trio workout in a similar vein.

In the download section Santa’s Ride is a 12 minute experiment with an early 303 drum machine & a sitar like guitar that is probably more interesting than a lot of the late 80’s acid house in it’s scope.

The Inners were always searching for new avenues & eventually went back to trying to write ‘classic songs’.

Now remastered, they sound better than ever & there’s a chronological history & some rare photos. The excellent cover has the feel of those ‘old’ cassette releases, though it’s better!

If you like psych punk experimenters with an ear for a cool song then this is for you.

Innervestigate!

Signposts (TRI 25)

Signposts

Available as CD or download

This is the follow up to ‘The Extra Traveller’ album from 2011, containing 12 new spoken word pieces. Plus a bonus poem in the middle of the booklet!

The mundane & the metaphysical are dealt with here, as usual: From Womb to Words to Worms sets the scene & ends with Nobody. In between there is a humorous anti UKIP ‘rant’, a piece dedicated to the old ways in Analogue is Holy & a frightening soundscape called Touching Time & a beautiful one in Vibrations.

The human condition is dealt with in Making Up Plans for World Domination & The Four Billion Year Burial. Also the anti consumerist Going Against The Grain/Made It? is a piece about the frustrations of peer group pressure. The piece Elitism For All tells it like it should have been & there is aching melancholia in Some Days Should Last Forever.
There is lots of variation in the mood, with words & music complimenting.

Musically this collection is less reliant on Tonal’s synth as he switches to guitar. Usual musical partner Howard Jacques is on percussion, bamboo flutes & provides synth for some of the pieces. A highlight is the the excellent sax playing of Eugene Bezodis who colours in the spaces with feeling. There is a radical but listenable quality to all his parts. An organic presence pervades.

Overall the musical input is more listener friendly & approachable than Extra Traveller, complimenting the texts better than ever. Tonal reckons it’s amongst his best efforts, ever!

Nature Wins… Everytime! (TRI 23)

23

Available as a download only (for now)….?

This six track mini album is from an obscure French/Dutch band living in Luxembourg, vocalising in near perfect English.
& how TRI wish they were!

Lanternes Rouges translates into English as Red Lanterns. The lanterne rouge being the last placed cyclist in the Tour de France. This term inspired a key song on the album about the ‘darker side’ of championship cycling : Mr. Cycle/Mindweak.

The collection starts with a space chant : Multicoloured Lanterns & ends on a similar theme, with the atmospheric Aurora.

Another highlight is a reworking of the Innerpropriates classic psych anthem, from the ’80’s : Never (Again). A gem!

The space theme crops up again with UDFy38135539 with guest vocals from Andy Clarke, late of Milk Roar. This is the song the Lanternes liked so much they recorded it to save it from obscurity.

The eternal theme of the human condition is summarised in the song The Most Right You Can Be. This hard rockin’ track has an insistent Killing Joke type groove.

Just who is a Lanterne Rouge will hopefully be revealed with U.K. dates in 2014.
They are thinking of moving to a Belgian farmhouse in preparation for their tour.

Concert 24 – Sets 1 & 3 (TRI 22)

22

This officially sanctioned release is a live recording from late 1998.
Released as a memorial CD to Lol, who passed away last year.
Set 1 starts with Lol & ‘the Fibres’ then towards the end, Hawkwind legend Nik Turner arrives to add his improvised sax. This was Nik’s first experience of total free playing, he has since said.
Set 3 sees them all pile in for a great blowing & riffing experience & is quite intense…
46,000 Fibres are best described as somewhere between AMM & Faust, with their own distinctive take.

A special release for a more than special musician that is Lol Coxhill.

Ghost Vest Swarm (TRI 20)

20

Stick is, probably, one of the best almost unknown drummers of our times.
He played in the Innerpropriates, Chud & the Wayward Sunns before accepting an offer to join legendary art terrors The Mutoid Waste Company in 1992. He has been touring Europe ever since!

The album is just full of powerful, inventive drumming which he  wants you to sample, in both senses of the word.

It’s full on & it’s fun!

Probability ‘L’ (TRI 19)

Layout 1

Available only as a download

As strange as TRI 16. This album was mooted as the last M.L.R. release in 1983 but never got beyond the plan to record.

The main feature is the narrative, telling the story of two travellers who go off in search of a mythical land, following the sighting of a ‘U.F.O’…
There follows a blurring of realities…

Musically, it features old MLR recordings interspersed with new incidental sounds & is out there, in all senses…

(TRI 16)

Layout 1

Probably one of the most schizophrenic albums ever, well, in our catalogue!
In 1993 the Goshpurts improvise 33 songs of ‘thrash punk agit prop’ in 45 minutes, with on the spot lyrics.
The recording is then forgotten about til 2008.
Then…a time travelling thespian, from the 17th century, arrives in a recording studio to translate/decipher the lyrics!
The results has to be heard to be believed….

Out there & in there!

Simplicity (TRI Ark-1)

Layout 1

This 2 CD set is a history of probably one of most underground units of the late 1970’s.

It brings together the best of their 5 cassette albums & most of their vinyl release from 1980, ‘Persian Version’- now a collectors item!
The Messthetics people chose one their songs  Noise in My Kitchen, for one of their collections.

Psyched up to the max, it’s a most enjoyable listen, & all the more wonderful because these guys conjured songs out of their minds & recorded them all first take!

Sort of Amon Düül but not!

35 tracks inc. all the tracks from the rare Persian Version vinyl:
Metropolis Radio, Field Hermit, Labbasounds, Place for Us, Wrecked Rectors, Hypocrisy & more!
